Eco-design : talk about it

As part of the renewal of its ranges, Bourgeois took the opportunity to add the environmental parameter to traditional design criteria: a responsible, innovative choice.

Eco-design

Sustainable development

Extract from the Bourgeois 2008-2010 corporate objectives: "In accordance with its articles of association, Bourgeois applies a rule for distributing profits which gives priority to ensuring the long-term viability of the company and which maintains a fair balance between remunerating labour and capital. At least one third is allocated to reserves and provisions for investments. At least one third is used as remuneration for labour via an exceptional shareholding agreement. Remuneration for capital cannot exceed one third of the result. Concerning remuneration for executives, Bourgeois applies the ceilings specified by the Law of 2001 concerning socially responsible companies.
For all its new products, Bourgeois also makes the commitment to comply with an eco-design approach relating to both the materials used, the manufacturing methods, and their functioning. For Bourgeois, this environmental approach supplements its economic and social approach as a co-operative, fully integrating it into the three dimensions - the economic, social and environmental dimensions - of sustainable development."

In the field of eco-design, the approach primarily concerned making appliances by:

In terms of manufacturing the new "Zénith" oven, the saving achieved is 71 kg/CO2 per oven, or an annual amount exceeding 180 tonnes/CO2 (subject to an equivalent production volume).

It then gave rise to work relating to the use made of appliances, which are responsible for 90% of equivalent CO2 emissions, by:

Thanks to this approach, the "Zénith" oven offers a 20 to 40% reduction in energy consumption, with this consumption being measured in real time.
For measuring consumption levels and to enable customers to make objective comparisons between models or brands, Bourgeois decided to apply the ENAK/SVGG protocol. All the test reports for the "Zénith" range ovens are drawn up in accordance with this protocol.

The approach also related to increasing the end-of-life recyclability rate and establishing a recycling process in accordance with the WEEE regulation of 20 July 2005. This process was set up in co-operation with SYNEG and the company Resystem-Pro which handles organising the collection, sorting and reprocessing arrangements for the components.

For the implementation of its eco-design approach, Bourgeois benefited from the technical support of CETIM (the Mechanical Engineering Industries Technical Centre) and CETIAT (the Air Flow and Thermal Industries Technical Centre).
CETIM created the eco-design methodology for mechanical engineering products, which has moreover just been included in the PRNF E01-005 standard.
Several enterprises have already achieved significant results using this eco-design approach, including Bourgeois, which received the first "CETIM Eco-Design" certification for the Zénith oven.
